The quillfish is a slender, elongated, eel-like fish growing up to 34 cm long. It has over 230 vertebrae and many rayed fins. It burrows in sandy and muddy bottoms during the day, emerging at dusk to feed. It makes significant seasonal migrations of less than 200 km at particular times of the year for breeding or hibernation.
