The Trichoglossus haematodus (scientific name) or the rainbow lorikeet is a brightly coloured parrot, native to Australia and many regions of South-East Asia. Its habitat consists of rainforests, woodlands and coastal bush areas. Weighing an average of 75 grams, it grows to a length of over 11 inches. Its plumage is extremely bright and attractive. The head is bright blue; the neck and collar are greenish-yellow; the chest is orange; belly and lowerparts are blue like the head and the wings and rest of the upperparts are green. The bird feeds in a flock and its diet consists of fruit, pollen and nectar. It breeds during the months of September and December, nesting in tree hollows, and overhanging rocks. Eggs are incubated for 25 days and the clutch-size varies from 1-3 eggs. The bird’s IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
