In 1981, the youth congress committee requested Rajiv to fight election. A that year, there were elecitons fer eihgt loksabha consntitneng and twenty-three state assembles. Congress wanted to give Rajiv any of the coustitneng he linked. He had to file his nomitaiton papers upto 4th May and on 5th May Indiraji was goint abroad. But a day before the had to go to Behind to cook after the mutiny affected areas. In evening the returned back to Delhi. Rajiv also accempained her to Behind as a pilot. Soon after her return, a meeting took place of the Congress Parliamentary Committee. In the meeting Basant Dada Patil proposed the name of Rajiv for the Amethi Lokshaba coustituency, and it was passed inaninously by all the members.
Sanjay had proviously won the elections from Amethi and was an M.P. after his death, the seat was vacant. So accending to Patil, Rajiv was the best for this coustitnency. But Indiraji fully left the deicsiow to be made by Rajiv on his won and wen abroad. Rajiv finally accepted the proposal and signed it. The same day he also recived the membership of Congress party. The after Rajiv left for Lucknow to submit his nomination paper. At that tiem a lot of person fited their nomination papers from Amethi. So it was a tough competition. During elections, Rajiv visited Amethi for the first time. He visited all the villages of Amethi. Throughout the day he activiely presided over the meetings, attended functions. He met the people and listen to their problems. The poor were always very close to Rajiv’s heart. He shares then joys and surrows. The people who accomparied him to villages used to get tined but Rajiv activety moved on from one village to another unstoppable. The people of Amethi never saw him distressed. Thye always saw his smiling and mixing with then like an ordinary person. In places hewas welcomed with flowers, teh older women gave him bessings, girls used to put “Tilak” on his forehead. He stops at many pleases, gives his views, listen to them, then moves forward. He has a symbol of Humanity.
Once Rajiv visited “Gauniganj” for a Dinner. e was accompanied by a lot of Congress workers. He received a waun welcome by the organisess. Thereafter he attended the cultural function. The next day he left for ‘Balbhadrapur’. People come in masses to see him. He listen to the problems of every person with full interest. He also try to solve their problem on the spopt, as in the case of a older women, whose fertile land had been exchanged by cousolidation officers in swampy land. Rajiv immediately ordered the officers to give land to older women of her choice and the got it. The women blessed him with the of her heart. This blessing beaned its fruits and Rajiv won the Amethi lok sabha seat with a margin of over 1 lakh seventeen thousand votes. On this oceasion, whole Amethi was in fetive mood. People distributed sweets and daveed on streets. Everywhere there was happiness.
After beurning member of Parliament, Rajiv layed out many new schemes and programmes. He listans to the problems of the people of his coustitnency and visited there at regular intenals. He tried his best to lost otu their problems. He alsogave an assurance of his regular visit. He never made people sayingthat once elected, he never visited. After winning the elections, his first tour was of Amethi. It is because of then love and affection, he won the elections with flying colours.
Rajiv organised his first meeting in the court of ‘King of Amethi.’ Thereafter he wanted to proceed towards villages to meet people but he get the information that one to heavy rainfall, the roads had been broken and it will be not a wise deuriow to move further. But Rajiv had made up his mind because assending to him, people were expecting him and anxiously wanting for his arival. He didn’t want to that them, so he proceeded. After reacling with difficulty, he listened to their problems and made pnnuies to sort them in time. He distributed money to needy, clothes to poor and also helped many persons to stant their own business. In this way he gave a new life to infinite pessous. They never ever forgeted the good deeds of Rajiv.
After returning to Delhi from Amethi, Rajiv had a meeting with the members of Public weaks Department. Rajiv narrated the ineidents and the problems he faced while travelling, to the chief engineer Mr. Tiwari. There were ten such plces of road bloakade due to which traffic comes to stand still. So he urged the neccssity for hurme pipe and asked the days in which it should be fitted. Mr. Tiwari sadi within fifteen days the work will be finished. Rajiv gave him one month time and ordered that it should be completed within requisite tiem so that villagers can get some relief. One the orders of Rajiv, Tiwari started the work and finally the work was complted within time and thenafter the traffic was normal.
