On 21st May 1991, Rajiv arived at Chennai airport from Visakhapatnam ennoute to Sriperumbudur. People in masses were wating for the arival of their dear leader. At about 10:00 PM Rajiv reached Sriperumbudur. As soon as he reached, the people surounded to have a glimpse of him; but somehow he managed to reach the stage. Rajiv was accempanied by a tight security. Some people wanted to reach him, but they were stopped by the security guards.
Suddenly a lady moved towards Rajiv to gasland him. Nobody had thoght of it to be a human bomb. When the lady tried to come closer towards Rajiv, the guards stopped her but Rajiv ordered the guards to let her come. The garlands Rajiv, suddenly a huge explosion occused. The whole area was surrounded by black smoke. People started running letter-skeltor. After some time when smoke disappeared, people saw that their living leader was no more. The explosionhad taken his life everybody was dumbstruck. The news of his assassination spread like fire througout the country, and in abroad. Everybody who are related to polities, strugly undemned his killiing. The people of Amethi were crying the a child. They were not ready to beleive that their dear settaek for India as the country lost a world class leader. It was something unbelivable. His death brought to India the creel realisation that till now we have been unable to contain the meance of tererism. The world lost a link betwen the developed and the developing, between the east adn teh west, between the modern and the aveient. The dead body of Rajiv reached Delhi where people througed to have the last light of their great leader. Prime Minister and Presidents of many countries had already reached Delhi for the funeral. Rajiv’s son Rahul lighted fire in pyre. On this sad occasion, Rajiv’s childhood friend Amitabh Bachehan was also present. His eyes were also wet. Everybody present there were raising only one slogan—
“Jab Tak Suraj-Chand Rahega
Rajiv Tera Naam Rahega”
Along with Rajiv seventeen others died in that tragie incident. Next day i.e. on 22nd May 1991, the state police registered case and Mr D.R. Karthikeyan, the senior CBI officer was made in change of the investigation. Judge S.M. Soddick has appointed to try the case.
On 28th January 1997, judge finds 26 accused guilty and said LTTE was responsible for Rajiv’s death. The 26 persons who have been saeteveed to death in Rajiv’s assassination were—

Had Indian intelligence agencies devoded the LTTE’S messages the intercepted, farmer Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination could have been averted, says the final report of the justice M.C. Jain Commission. The report couldes—“There was a failure of intelligence-both local and central. Else, such a national tragedy could have been averted.”
Rajive Gandhi Foundation
The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation was established on 21st June 1991 to commemorate Rajiv Gandhi’s vision for India. The foundation aims to work in area, which were of deepest concern to Rajiv for promoting progammes of national development. She Foundation is concerned on the following areas—
1. To provide elementary education and litaracy.
2. Emprovement of down-tnodeen including womens, childrens and economically weaker sections.
3. To provide health fertilies in backward areas.
4. To prmote science and technology for the welfare of the people.
5. Helping the disabled pessons to make them self-rehiant and also to provide them equal oppestunities for employment or self-employment.
Though Rajiv Gandhi Foundation we are all trying to carry forward his vision and we think, we have enough material on which to build the India which he had hoped for, whcih he had dreamed about. We must all try to do that.
