Ravana stationed his generals and warriors where they could defend Lanka against the attacks of the enemy. He tried to destroy Seeta’s confidence. One of his rakshasas, Vidyutjihva, showed her an illusion where Rama’s head rolled before her. Frightened, she wept, but soon heard war drums and knew this could not be her lord. Sugreeva was examining the arrangements of Ravana secretly, when he saw him. Unable to control his fury, Sugreeva leapt on Ravana, shouting, “I am Rama’s friend and servant! I will destroy you today!” There was a fierce battle but neither could defeat the other. Tired out, Ravana began to use magic, which Sugreeva realised. He jumped back to his troops. Rama saw his impulsive action and was so touched that he hugged Sugreeva. They all sat together and learnt the details of the area and its defence from Hanuman and Vibheeshana.
