Reading is an important activity in any society. It can be both a source of joy and a means of increasing knowledge. Reading also helps us pass time.
There are many who know how to read but do not read enough. They have little interest in reading and do not see much value in it. There are still others, young and old, who would like to read but have poor access to books or other reading materials.
Since reading carries immense value, the habit must be promoted from the time a child is able to read. Children must be motivated to read and enjoy doing so. Reading storybooks to them is one sure way of achieving this. As children normally like to hear stories before they go to bed, parents could make use of this opportunity to encourage the habit of reading.
Another way to inculcate the reading habit among the children is to make books easily available to them. Parents should take their children to the library regularly and make it a routine for them to borrow books. Children could also be encouraged to take part in reading programmes organized by the library.
How about setting up a reading corner at home and stocking it with reading materials? This will help create an appropriate learning environment and is a sure way of enticing children to read.
The habit of reading, once acquired, stays throughout life. As we grow older, books become a trustworthy companion and area most helpful when we are lonely. A person who has made reading a source of joy will never be satisfied no matter how much he reads. Reading always has more to offer.
