The Eos bornea (scientific name) or red lory is native to the Moluccas Islands in Indonesia. They are pugnacious, flamboyant birds, which are very playful and colourful in appearance. 12 inches in length, the red lory, as the name suggests, is bright red in colour, with blue, black markings on its back and wings. It has an orange beak and red irises. Its diet includes pollen, nectar, fruits and insects. Once they mate, lories get very territorial. An average clutch-size is 2 eggs, incubated for 24 days. Red lories also display some peculiar behaviour like sleeping on their backs with their feet up in the air. These birds make for great pets. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
