The Pycnonotus jocosus (scientific name) or red-whiskered bulbul is found commonly in hilly forest regions, gardens and tropical forests throughout Asia. At 7.9 inches in length, this bird stands out because of its pointed black crest, red face-patch and thin line from its beak that resembles a moustache. It has brown upperparts and whitish underparts. Mainly surviving on fruits and nectar, the red-whiskered bulbul sometimes also eats insects. Breeding season occurs once or even twice a year, with males displaying various courtship rituals. An average clutch-size has 2-3 eggs laid in cup-shaped nests, incubated for 12 days. These birds roost in loose groups of at least a 100 or more. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
