The princes in the Tower refers to the sons of King Edward IV, 12-year-old Edward V and his younger brother 9-year-old Richard. Edward V, expecting his coronation, was taken to the Tower of London along with his brother Richard, by the man appointed to look after them–their uncle, the Lord Protector: Richard, Duke of Gloucester. By July 1483, they were declared illegitimate and the Duke was crowned King Richard III. It is widely assumed the Richard III killed his nephews in 1483. However, there is no direct or reliable evidence that the princes were murdered. It is only known that they disappeared.
