They are the largest members of the cat family. Of the eight species that existed, three became extinct in the 20th century; they are hunted as trophies; their bones and fur are used for traditional medicines. This has caused a sharp decrease in their numbers, pushing them to the brink of extinction once more; less than two thousand five hundred tigers are left worldwide.
