Sally and the Banshee

Sally lived in the countryside with her grandparents. Her grandpa narrated all kinds of stories. One night, he said to Sally, “When I was a child back in Ireland, I would ride to and from home on a horse. Once in a while, my horse would stop dead in its tracks. Animals sense evil quickly, better than human beings. I would tell it to trudge on, but it would not budge. Then I would feel the coldness and would hear the banshee’s wail. As far as I can recall, the banshee’s wail is the worst. Then the wailing and chill in the air would pass on and my horse would move again.” That night, Sally’s dog growled and hid under the bed. When she looked out of the window, she saw a white-haired lady rise in the air and wail. Sally flashed her silver cross at her and she flew away. Since then, Sally never went out without her silver cross.
