Salvador Fidalgo was born on 6th August 1756 in Spain and he died on 27th September 1803 (aged 47 years) in Tacubaya, Mexico City, Mexico. Salvador was a Spanish explorer who commanded an expedition for Spain to Alaska and the Pacific Northwest during the 18th century. He was a member of the team of cartographers who were working on the first atlas of Spain’s coasts and waters. Salvador was sent to Spain’s furthermost settlement just off today’s Vancouver Island. He sailed and anchored in the present day Alaska and claimed it for the Spanish sovereignty. He sailed further ahead and discovered a port they decided to call ‘Puerto Valdez’.
