Samaria Gorge

Samaria-Gorge

The Samaria Gorge is a National Park that is also the World’s Biosphere Reserve. The Samaria Gorge is situated on the island of Crete, in Greece. The National Park was established in 1962.

Why it is special: A small river that ran between the White Mountains and Mount Volakias led to the creation of the Samaria Gorge. The Gorge is 16 km in stretch and at a certain point the gorge narrows down to only 4 metres in width with the mountainside both the sides soaring more than 300 metres high. The Gorge is home to the kri-kri, a Cretan goat and also to various endemic species of flowers and birds.
