Sarmak, the Slave

Sam Ahmar, assuming that the blazing fire must have destroyed Hatim, thought of seeing the scene in his magic mirror. He was shocked to see that the fire did not touch Hatim, because of his magic pearl. Ahmar ordered his slave Sarmak to take Hatim into the prison and pelt stones on him, till he surrendered his magic pearl. For several weeks, Sarmak did what the magician had ordered. Meanwhile, Hatim prayed to God to let him take a dip in freshwater to ward off the evil effects of the drink. One night, Sarmak thought that he would let Hatim do what he wanted and in return ask for his pearl. Sam Ahmar saw him in his magic mirror freeing Hatim. He sent his army to punish Sarmak. By then, Hatim had taken a dip in freshwater and remembered the protective charm. When Sarmak asked for protection, Hatim was able to save him.
