The Eurostopodus diabolicus (scientific name) or satanic nightjar is found only in the forests of Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. 10.6 inches in length, this bird has greyish-brown plumage on the upperparts, with specks of brown, buff and tawny colours making it almost impossible to spot in its natural habitat. The underparts are buff with cinnamon-brown barring. Only the male has white wings-patches. A nocturnal bird, its diet consists of flying insects. Almost nothing is known regarding the breeding pattern of this bird, but from one sighting it is assumed that the clutch-size is comprised of 1 egg. It got its name from the locals, which wrongly believed it to be a demonic bird who plucked people’s eyes out. Its IUCN listing is VULNERABLE.
