Satyavati’s Sons

Bhishma led Satyavati to Hastinapura where she married King Shantanu. They had two sons: Chitrangada and Vichitravirya. Chitrangada succeeded Shantanu. But, unfortunately, he was killed in a battle with a gandharva. He died childless, so Vichitravirya was crowned the King of Hastinapura. Vichitravirya was a minor. Therefore, Bhishma guided him and ruled as his regent till he grew up. When he was old enough, Bhishma looked for a suitable wife for him. He heard that the king of Kasi was holding a swayamvara, as was the custom, for his daughters Amba, Ambika and Ambalika. He went to seek their hands for Vichitravirya. Many mocked him for being old. He challenged the other suitors to a contest on behalf of his brother and won the hands of the princesses. But Amba refused to go with Bhishma, because she had chosen Salva already. So, the other two princesses married Vichitravirya.
