The polar bears and the gulls loved their King though the latter was old and weak now. But he was very wise. The seals were scared of him. One day, a bad hunter shot the King and took away his fur and hide. The King lay in pain, dying. The gulls felt very sad and covered him with their feathers to protect him.
There was a new polar bear in the colony. His name was Woof and he was very vain about his strength. He declared that the old bear was too weak to be the King and laughed at him because he didn’t even look like a bear! He looked like a strange thing with feathers on! “The old King must fight against me if he wished to be the King,” he declared. The old King decided that he would take up the challenge.
The polar bears and the gulls were very worried. They wondered how the King could fight against Woof in such a weak condition. The gulls flew off immediately to find the King’s hide and fur. They found that the hunter had made it into a rug in his house. They picked it up and, carrying it, they flew back swiftly.
Meanwhile, the fight had begun between the old King and Woof. The King, already weak and injured, was finding it very difficult to beat Woof. He fell in the snow and lay there. Just then, the gulls flew down and flung his hide over him. The King regained his strength and with one blow he defeated and killed the arrogant Woof. The polar bears and the gulls cheered as the old King once more became well and strong.
