Scrambled Eggs

On Gerry’s Farm Hetty, the hen, and Donna, the duck, were great friends. There were a very neat coop for the hens and a pond for the ducks. But since Hetty and Donna were friends, they often met to chat about the farm. Hetty would trip over to the pond and Donna would stand outside the coop and quack till Hetty joined her happily and cheerfully.
One day, Hetty and Donna were wandering around the farm when they landed up in the stable where old Harry, the horse, stayed. They laid their eggs in the hay there and settled down to brood over them. Once in a while, they would wander out for food and then return to the stable.
It so happened that one of Gerry’s farm hands came there to clean the stable. He cleaned up the place and raked the hay into a neat pile. Luckily, the eggs did not get smashed. But they got mixed up!

When Donna and Hetty returned, they were horrified to see that the hay had been piled up. They scratched around and saw that the eggs were safe. The eggs looked alike. So after some debate, each of them sat down on four eggs.
In a few days, the eggs hatched and Hetty and Donna found they had a strange assortment of babies! The ducklings and the chicks were all mixed up. Gerry found them and laughed to see the ‘scrambled eggs’!
They didn’t know how to identify their babies. But as the little birds acquired their feathers, their habits soon made it clear whether they would be ducks or hens. The chicks scratched busily in the yard, looking for worms. If Donna took them near the pond, they ran away at top speed!
The ducklings followed Hetty or Donna in a straight line, one behind the other. Among Hetty’s chicks were the two who drifted off to the pond and while the chicks scuttled away, the ducklings sailed around happily!
3 chicks scratching in the dust in the yard, pulling out a worm; 1 duckling looking confused; a little way away a duck walking along near the pond with 2 ducklings following in a single file and another swimming; 1 chick behind her looking terrified at the water.
It was all very confusing. But Harry said wisely, “They’ve got two Mums each. One Mum is enough to deal with! Poor Chicks and Ducklings!” Now Hetty and Donna had to run around minding all the little fledglings!

Finally, they decided that they should ‘unscramble’ the two so that Donna might not try to teach the chicks to swim and Hetty might not train the ducklings to scratch in the yard. Now there was harmony on Gerry’s farm!
