See Your DNA (61 Brilliant Biology Experiments)

You will need:

1. 1 bottle of any colourless sports drink
2. Dish-washing liquid soap
3. Pineapple juice
4. 1 wooden skewer (looks like a long wooden toothpick)
5. Rubbing alcohol
6. Transparent glass
7. Small spoon

INSTRUCTIONS

1. 24 hours before your experiment, place the rubbing alcohol in the freezer.
2. Take your sports drink and swish it around in your mouth for 2-3 minutes.
3. Rub your teeth on the inside of your cheek while swishing.
4. Spit out the swished sports drink into
   a glass until it is 1/3rd full.
5. Slowly add dish-washing liquid soap
   until the glass is half full.
6. Stir the mixture by spoon, to mix the drink and soap without causing bubbles.
7. Add 2-3 drops of pineapple juice and
   mix it gently.
8. Get the previously frozen alcohol and pour it slowly in the glass till it forms a layer over the remaining mixture.
9. Place the glass upright for 2 minutes.

RESULT

You should be able to see a gooey mixture between the layers of alcohol and remaining mixture. Taking a wooden skewer, gently swirl the gooey mixture with the skewer and pull it out of the glass. You have successfully extracted your own DNA by adding liquid soap and pineapple juice which breaks down the cell membrane of the molecules. And by adding the alcohol we help the extracted DNA to precipitate from the solution.
