Valmiki spoke up to say that he was aware of Seeta’s unfailing devotion to Rama. “You must go back now to Ayodhya with your husband. You deserve all the happiness now. That is what I wish for you, my child,” he said gently. Valmiki told Rama that he would stake all the merit of his austerities on Seeta’s purity. “I have never doubted Seeta’s devotion, revered sir,” replied Rama, “But the citizens of his kingdom must take the first place in a king’s life.” Rama sent Lakshmana to persuade Seeta to return. Lakshmana eagerly obeyed him and requested her to come back so that he might repent for his sin in leaving her in the ashrama. Seeta was eager to follow Valmiki’s advice and would have gone back to Ayodhya joyfully. But Rama stood by silently. Seeta looked at him and thought he was still hesitant about taking her back.
