Semyon Dezhnev was born in 7th March 1605 in Veliky Ustyug, Russia and he died in 1673 (aged 68 years) in Moscow, Russia. Semyon was a Russian explorer of Siberia and the first European to sail into the Bering Strait much before Vitus Bering. He travelled to Siberia on an expedition organized in an attempt to reach the area near the Arctic. They attempted to move to an area near Pogycha River which failed twice before they reached it. They were shipwrecked and stranded there for almost a year. They had sailed from Kolyma River on the Arctic ocean to Anadyr river on the Pacific ocean.
Do you know: Semyon Dezhnev did not lay claim to his discovery of Bering Strait, hence, it was forgotten for about a hundred years and Bering was given the credit for discovering it.
