Shatrughna forgot that the two facing him were mere boys. He was so angry at the defeat of his soldiers that he attacked the boys furiously. Luv and Kush were more than capable of defending themselves. They had been trained by Valmiki in archery. He had also told them the story of Sri Rama. The wise old sage knew that the people of Ayodhya needed to learn a lesson for the sorrow they had caused their King and his saintly wife. He had prepared Luv and Kush for this. Very soon, the boys had chased off the army and wounded Shatrughna seriously. He dropped down unconscious. Seeing this the few soldiers left and ran to Ayodhya to break the news to Rama. Rama ordered Lakshmana to go forth to fetch the horse. He said the boys should not be killed. They should only be captured.
