with nothing but heat.INSTRUCTIONS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Hang the rubber band from a place which is sturdy yet has place for the rubber band to move.
  2. Stretch the rubber band and see how far it goes.
  3. Next, hang a weight on it which stretches the rubber band almost till its limit.
  4. Be careful not to drop anything. Get that hair dryer ready.
  5. Blow hot air from the hair dryer onto the stretched rubber band and watch what happens.

RESULT

The hot air from the hair dryer will make the rubber band shrink!! This, in turn, pulls the weight automatically upwards. Once the heat source is gone from the rubber band, it will again stretch downwards. Rubber is made of long chains which are repeating constantly. When stretched, these cross linking chains to straighten out. As a result, when heated, the molecules which are straightened out begin to wiggle and vibrate causing the rubber band to shrink.
