Once, Sinku the chipmunk used to live in the tree. She was so mischievous and always played tricks on the others. One day Sinku stole eggs from other animals’ nests and went to Mitu. Mitu the mouse told him not to destroy other animals’ nests and steal their eggs as it would get her into trouble. But Sinku didn’t hear him and ate her supper of roasted eggs. Next morning, Sinku was hungry again. She thought to steal eggs again. Then, later, Sinku came back with a huge egg.
Mitu was surprised to see such a big egg and asked Sinku from where he got it. “I found it in a nest on the ground,” replied Sinku. “It must be a crocodile’s egg or an ostrich’s,” Mitu said. “There are no crocodiles or ostriches here,” chuckled Sinku. Soon Sinku heard a hustling sound behind the bushes. “Who is there? You can’t take away my egg!” And just then an owl darted forth. Sinku was so afraid that she dropped the egg. The owl immediately picked it up and flew back to its nest. “You’re lucky that the owl didn’t attack you with its talons,” said Mitu. From that day on, Sinku stopped stealing eggs.
