Sir Edmund Hillary was born on 20th July 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand, and passed away on 11th January 2008 (aged 88-89 years) in Auckland, New Zealand. The first person to climb Mount Everest, along with Tenzing Norgay, they stayed there only a few minutes as the air was so thin. He summited several other Himalayan peaks and was the third person to reach the South Pole over land and the first to do so using motor vehicles. On 6th June 1953 Edmund Hillary was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire and received the Queen Elizabeth-II Coronation Medal.
