Sixth jail visit

On 8th April 1932, Jawaharlal was sent to jail for sixth term on account of anti-government activities. Even their relatives had not been bestowed. Shri Ranjit Pandit, Sant Krishna Nehru all of them were in jail. Due to the ill-health, Kamla Nehru was not arrested. Jawaharlal’s mother was seeing all the happenings but she was helpless. So she decided to participate in the National week celebrated from 6th April to 15th April, 1932. On 8th April a huge procession was taken out under the leadership of Smt. Swaroop Rani. But later she was beaten in a lathi charge and badly injured. The old lady was full of courage and spirit. “I am proud to have been beaten with sticks for the cause of my motherhood…while being beaten I thought of you and your father and did not utter a sigh…The mother of a brave son is also somewhat like him. It was only a lathi—had it been a gun I would have bared my chest.” It added to the intense despair of Jawaharlal. If he would have been there, he might forget the lesson of non violence being taught by Gandhiji for past 12 years.
Still not left by police
After sometime Jawaharlal was released from jail. The Congress was to organise a meeting in January 1934, and the arrest of leading Congress leaders were continuing. Whole environment was very tense. Many meetings and gatherings were held. That was the month of the great Bihar earthquake when most of the province was ravaged. The first and immediate task was to organise relief, in which Jawaharlal was busy. He criticised the government for callousness in rescuing people who lay buried in the earthquake.
On his return from a strenuous tour of Bihar, a warrant from Calcutta was waiting for him and, after a freedom of five months, he was taken to Calcutta and kept in the Presidency jail, and tried there. There was no defence. He was sentenced to two years, his seventh term of imprisonment.
