Smoke Bombs (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Potassium nitrate
    (available at chemists or
    fertilizer shops)
  2. Sugar
  3. A utensil
  4. Aluminium foil

Try making your very own smoke bombs with this simple experiment and have loads of fun trying them out with your friends.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Take a unit of measurement and measure out 3 parts of potassium nitrate and 2 parts of sugar into a utensil.
  2. Place on the stove and begin to heat the mixture on a low flame, while stirring it with long strokes.
  3. Once the sugar looks like it has started to dissolve, remove the mixture from the gas. Wait for it to
cool down a bit before you return
it to the stove and heat it again.
  4. Basically, you have to caramelise the sugar mixture till it becomes chocolaty colour.
  5. Once the sugar has caramelised, remove it from the heat and pour it into a bowl or small dish covered
with aluminium foil to cool down.
  6. Once it has set, you can peel
    away the foil.

RESULT

Upon cooling, the smoke bomb is ready to use. Take the small pieces of smoke bomb outside and using an incense stick or a long-handled lighter ask an adult to light the bomb. The solid smoke bomb is flammable and it immediately burns with a bright purple flame. You could even place a
wick in the smoke bomb when you are about to set it.
