Mrs Atlee’s cat, Snowball, wanted to live on a farm, and was very unhappy in the city. There was simply nothing for her to do. A farm would be so interesting. That summer Mrs Atlee visited her brother, Farmer Mailer, and took Snowball with her. Snowball was thrilled! There was so much space to run around! She had a marvellous time chasing the hens and the chicks, the ducklings and the mice! But Farmer Mailer’s wife was really upset. “Your cat has created furore in the hen-house and the eggs are all broken!” she announced, “Mrs Atlee, do lock her up before she does more damage!” But Mrs Atlee was happy to see Snowball enjoying herself. “It’s just for a few weeks, Mrs Mailer!” she explained. But the next morning, Mrs Mailer caught Snowball sneaking into the larder. She thrashed her soundly with the broom! Mrs Atlee and Snowball were back in the city that very day!
