The Locals believe that spitting three times wards off the devil and turns away bad luck. Hence, they always spit thrice such ‘ftou, ftou, ftou’ if a person in their presence is speaking of death, accidents or the like. Spitting is also said to ward off the evil eye; hence, if someone gives a person a compliment, he spits in the direction of the one receiving the compliment.
