It is a long-lived, drought-tolerant and non-spreading plant. It is a mounded clump-forming plant that is one of the best for borders. The plant bears dense, flattened yellow flowers in spring, and is one of the few perennials with showy autumn foliage. The leaves are medium to dark green, or tinged with purple or red. In autumn, they turn to a showy red, purple or orange. The showy yellow floral bracts provide the colour. However, the flowers are nondescript.
