St. Mark’s Basilica is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdioceses. It is situated in Venice, Northern Italy. St. Mark’s Basilica was completed in 1092.
Why is it special: This cathedral church is one of the most famous churches in the city. A classic example of Italo-Byzantine architecture, the church was originally a Chapel of the Doge until 1807. The church stood as a representation of power, wealth and opulence of the Venetian people. Because of its lavish designs and gold ground mosaic, the church was also nicknamed, ‘Church of Gold’.
