It is a humungous-seated figure of the Greek god Zeus. The Statue was erected in the Temple of Zeus, in Olympia, Greece. The Greek sculpture Phidias built the statue in 435 BC.
Why it is special: The Statue of Zeus was constructed 13 metres tall within the Temple in Olympia. The statue was so vast that the temple would be unroofed if the statue were to stand. Sadly, the statue was either lost or destroyed by the 5th century AD leaving behind no copy. Travellers in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD have made vivid and detailed descriptions of the statue.
