At present, stenography has proved to be a great medium for employment. In this field where there are great possibilities placed for women to be successful, there is a lot which men can also do.
No doubt, stenography is a respectful career for capable and talented people. Those women who have the qualities of good behaviour, confidence, and public relations, etc., can become on expert stenographer and can gain a lot from their talent.
A capable and expert stenographer can take notes in shorthand at a minimum speed of 120 words per minute. As compared to stenotypist, there is a lot of potential and intelligence hidden in the work of stenographer. Reason for this is that the work of a stenographer carries more responsibility. Minimum academic qualification required this is 10+2 but in many places graduates were given preference. The young men and women of the age group between 18 to 25 yrs. can send their applications for the formal training of stenography. Selection is made on merit. Applicants appearing at the top of merit list are given admission.
With the changes happening in the working environment of rapidly spreading business firms, offices, government and non-government institutions, there are great job possibilities for trained stenographers.
Public Service Commission organises competitive exam in Central Secretariat for employment in stenography. In many States appointments are made Public Service Commission and capable stenographers were given placements as Personal Secretary (P.S.). For this post, there is always a great demand for capable and intelligent young women in secretarial work.
For secretarial work only knowledge regarding shorthand and typing is just not enough. Along with it what is required is the complete knowledge of banking, economics, audit, business correspondence, work place and business management.
There is an arrangement for women to get training in Secretariat Practices from (Y.W.C.A.) and other institutes. For those candidates who want to appear for the stenography examination, Ministry of Indian Government publishes a book which, one can buy by writing a letter to the “Publishing Department, Indian Government., Civil Line, New Delhi. Name of the book is “Career for Arts and Commerce Graduate”.
There is also an arrangement of scholarship for those young women who are capable and intelligent and wants to take training in stenography by “Industrial Training Institute, Jail Road, Delhi. Girls having typing speed of 40 words per minute and shorthand speed of 80 words per minute are eligible for scholarships. During this training, not only training regarding shorthand and typing is being given but subjects like S.S.T, English and Office Management are also been taught. On one hand, where stenographer is in direct contact with the CEO or the owner, on the other hand he contributes to take important decisions. Therefore, there are a lot of chances of moving ahead in this field.
