Stretch Your Mind (Brilliant Biology Experiments)

You will need:

q An armless chair
q Large blackboard
q Classroom
q Pen and 2 sheets of paper
q Large wooden ruler or yardstick
q 5-6 volunteers

Find out whether the mind can actually help to achieve greater physical flexibility and dexterity.

INSTRUCTIONS

                1. Create 2 groups— ‘With Mental Imagery’ and ‘Without Mental Imagery’.

                2. On 2 sheets of paper, label 4 columns such as Subject No., Trial 1, Trial 2 and Difference.

                3. Trial 1—both groups perform the experiment.

                4. Draw a 8-feet horizontal line at the bottom of the blackboard. Number the line from 0 keeping a gap of 6 inches.

                5. Make the first volunteer sit on the armless chair with his back 2 feet from the blackboard.

                6. Note down in the column—Trial 1, the number that is seen by the volunteers if they twist their backs. Repeat with Group 2.

                7. In Trial 2, ask Group 2 to perform the same experiment. Note down the number in the appropriate column.

                8. Repeat the experiment with Group 1, but ask them to close their eyes and stretch their spines as if a magnet was twisting them.

                9. Ask each of them to see a number ahead of what they had seen. Note down the number they see now.

                10. Note down the difference between columns 2 and 3.

RESULT

The group ‘With Mental Imagery’ will have managed to turn further back in Trial 2 than they did in Trial 1 all because their brain showed them that they can.
