Struggle against atrocities

This incident left a very bad effect on Rammohan’s heart. He was very much moved by that incident. From that day itself he look an oath to eliminate the ‘Sati’ system prevailing in the society. With age this desire became more and more strong. Along with this, he had an earnest desire to eliminate other evils of the society also from the grassroot level. Tortures done on the innocent people always made him very sad.
Therefore, he wanted to transform the society completely which believed in sacrifice of manhood. Tortures done on the people in the name of rituals and customs were on their high and had their strong hold over the society. Therefore, Rammohan had an earnest desire to finish their hold form the grassroot level so that society has a totally new face for itself. People would live peacefully and not be thirsty of each other’s blood.
Transforming the structure of the society was not an easy task for Rammohan. He was very much keen to accomplish his objective. Some days later, he came to know that the Britishers were now not interested in transforming the Indian society. So he alone decided to eliminate the evils prevailing in the Indian society. He started his campaign against the social evils like child marriage, casteism, sati pratha and tortures on women, etc. He also decided to fight for those widows who had no relatives of their own. He considered illiteracy to be the root cause of evils prevailing in the society. He firmly believed that illiteracy and ignorance were responsible for the evils in the society which should be removed only by making the society literate. Britishers did not do anything regarding literacy. The kind of education provided in the schools was not enough to improve the future of the Indians. So, Rammohan decided to establish his own school for imparting education.
Rammohan considered all religions equally important so he had thoroughly researched all the shastras of all religions. In one of his speeches, he said, ‘‘Alongwith their mother tongue Indians should also be well very in many other languages. Today we are slaves of the Britishers. So, it is very much essential for us to learn English language. In this way, we may be able to keep ourselves updated about what is going around the globe. If desired, we may learn English language through the English books. This is possible only when we all read those books by heart.’’
Rammohan had a keen interest in science. He wanted to bring the scientific education system in India. For this, he regularly worked hard and made great efforts.
The government did not want the progress of education in India. But because of the foresightedness of Rammohan, the government did not succeed in its policy.
Many Britishers were influenced by the great thought of Rammohan. David Hayer was one of them. After having discussions with David, Rammohan established a public school in Calucutta.
Many students came to that school to attain education. Opponents of this system made many planning to oppose this in every way. That was why many important people had to face much difficulties due to involving themselves with that school. At this moment Rammohan decided to quit from the school committee. This pacified his opponents. Now, the conduct of the school came in the hands of other people. Though he had parted himself from the school committee, yet Rammohan still helped it in the times of need.
Inspite of opposition by other people, he was standing firmly for his mission. He wanted Indians to get higher level education. So he started another school under his supervision which was named Anglo-Hindu School.
