Mr. Gilbertson was an Englishman. Once he fell ill. The treatment didn’t work. He decided to go back to his homeland to see if the familiar climate helped.
The principal was worried. He expressed his concern to Gilbert, “If you go back to England the students will suffer. What about their mathematical studies?”
Gilbert revealed, “The students will not miss me, Mr. Principal. Our Tirthram can do the job. He is as good a mathematics teacher as I am. The students know him and he too always helps them out. I have full faith in the capabilities of Tirthram. God willing I will be back soon.”
After the departure of Gilbertson, the principal gave the responsibility of the mathematics classes to Tirthram. Tirthram took up the challenge manfully. The students were extremely enthused to have him as their teacher because now they could frankly tell him their problems and interact gainfully.
This association worked wonders.
The examination results revealed that the students had done exceptionally good in mathematics in comparison to other subjects. Several students had made it to the first division on the strength of their high marks in mathematics.
Meanwhile Gilbertson had recovered from illness and he returned to join the duty. He was not surprised to see the excellent performance of the students in his subjects. He knew it and had full faith in the brilliance of his protege.
Infact, the Englishman was so delighted that one day he called Tirthram to his house and gifted him a valuable clock.
