It is an omnivorous marsupial. A sugar glider has a thick, soft fur usually yellow or tan in colour, with a black stripe running from its nose to mid-back and cream-coloured belly, throat, and chest. The males have bald patches on their heads and chests. They have squirrel-like bodies that measure 24-30 cm.
