Sundial (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Sand
  2. Large straight stick
    (2 feet long)
  3. Pebbles + Chalk
  4. Large shallow dish
  5. Watch

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Take your large shallow dish outdoors and fill it with sand. Place it in an area
where there is plenty of undisturbed sunlight.
  2. Fix the straight stick into the sand, in an upright position at the very centre of
    the dish.
  3. Begin early the next day. At sharp 6.00 am, go outside and see where the
shadow of the stick is falling on the sand.
  4. Make a long line following the shadow and mark that hour as 6 using a
    pebble and chalk.
  5. Repeat the above step and keep marking the time, every hour, with its
    corresponding shadow.
  6. By the end of the day, your
    sundial will be complete.
  7. Retest your sundial the next
    day to test whether the
    markings are corresponding
to the shadow falling on them.

RESULT

While your sundial will be accurate for that specific season, the shadow length of the sun will change throughout the year. Sundials are a great indicator of telling time and also as indicators of change in season. You could even make your sundial using a straw and paper plate.
