The Lamprotornis superbus (scientific name) or superb starling is a small bird found mostly in East Africa, ranging from Ethiopia to Kenya and Tanzania. These birds are 7 to 7.5 inches in length. They have black heads, and metallic blue-purple backs, upper body, neck, wings and tail. Their chest and underbelly are burnt orange colour. While they do have fruits and berries, and even nectar from flowers, their main food is insects. They are known to approach human settlements to scavenge for crumbs and left overs. Even though the superb starling is primarily monogamous, females are known to have multiple partners, so as to help rear the young. An average clutch has 4 eggs incubated for 12-14 days. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
