There was a lot of whispering going on among the farm creatures. The chickens clucked and the ducks quacked. Matilda, the cow, mooed softly to Logan, the horse, and the sheep were baaing to one another. What had happened? Farmer Woodley had called the doctor and there had been lots of whispering inside the house. Jack, the spaniel, had told them that the doctor had given medicines for Mrs Woodley and told her to rest. Everyone was very worried and there was a great air of mystery. The cook and the maids were rushing around with towels and tubs of hot water. And by morning, there was a loud wail from the house. “It’s a baby-girl!” said the cook loudly. And there was such celebration on the farm. Bells rang and the neighbours arrived in carts and carriages to meet the new Woodley baby!
