Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya was born on 8th August 1948 in Moscow and she still lives today in Soviet Union, and is now retired. Svetlana was a Russian cosmonaut who had the honour of being the first woman to do a spacewalk and the second woman in space. She flew to space as a part of the Soyuz T-7 mission with two other cosmonauts. During this flight she moved outside the spacecraft and cut and welded metals in space along with a colleague. After her return, she was made the commander of the all-female Soyuz crew in commemoration of International Woman’s Day, a mission that was later cancelled.
