Having told them the story of Ganga, Vishwamitra stayed the night on the banks of the sacred river. Then, after worshipping her, they left for the onward journey to Mithila. Arriving at the palace of Janaka, Vishwamitra was received by the king with great respect and honour. He introduced the princes to Janaka. Janaka took all of them to the hall where many princes and warriors were assembled to fulfil the conditions of the swayamvara. A huge bow, that had been given by Lord Shiva, rested on a platform. It had to be strung by the contestants to win Seeta’s hand in marriage. Many strong warriors had made the attempt but were unsuccessful. Janaka was feeling very sad and anxious as he wondered aloud if anyone would be able to lift the heavy bow and string it. Who would win the hand of his beloved child Seeta in marriage?
