Inky, Farmer Laurel’s cat, was very vain. She thought she was the most beautiful creature on the farm and spent most of the time sitting on Mrs Laurel’s dressing table, admiring herself in the mirror! Bessie, the milkmaid, was rather fed up of Inky, because apart from looking into the mirror, she would steal the milk whenever she could. And Mrs Laurel thought poor Bessie was drinking it up! Bessie decided to catch Inky. One day, she put a jar with a small mouth on the dressing table with milk in it. Inky sniffed and stuck her head into it. She couldn’t get her head out! “Ma’am, take a look!” shouted Bessie. Mrs Laurel ran in and found Inky with her mouth in the milk jar, leaping around, looking a mess. Never again did Inky try to steal milk and now she rarely sat in before the mirror!
