This plant is a small-to-medium-sized deciduous conifer. It is a forest tree of bogs/ swamps. The tree has a straight, slender trunk and a narrow, open, pyramidal crown. The leaves are deciduous, needle-like. They are produced in clusters on short shoots or singly along the long shoots. They turn yellow during autumn and are shed in the same season. The fruits/cones are borne on short curving stalks. In its native place a decoction of the leaves has been used for diarrhoea and dysentery.
