Tapaculo

The Rhinocryptidae (scientific name) is a family of birds that go by the name tapaculo. These birds are only 4.0-9.5 inches in length and have short wings resulting in poor flight. They have strong legs, which help them to forage around the forest undergrowth. Most members of the family are small and have brown-black plumage. However, a few species are brightly coloured. A unique feature is its tail, which is cocked and pointed towards its head. Their diet consists of insects, seeds and plant material. The clutch has 2-3 eggs laid in a nest, which is in a covered location, like a burrow or hole in a tree. Incubation time varies depending on the species. The IUCN listing ranges from VULNERABLE to CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.
