The Angry Man

Once, an angry man came up to the Buddha and spat at him. The Buddha simply smiled. After a while, when the angry man realised that the Buddha would not react, he walked away silently. The angry man went home, but he could not sleep all night. He could not understand how someone could sit so calmly and still smile, even after being insulted. The next morning, he ran back to the Buddha and fell at his feet. “Please forgive me,” he said. The Buddha replied, “I cannot forgive you, because you have not done anything wrong to me. You are not the same angry man who came here yesterday. If I ever meet the person you spat on, I will ask him to forgive you.” The man gave up his anger and became a disciple of the Buddha.

Moral: True forgiveness does not make a person feel guilty for his mistake.
