The Bell

Shen was a young monk, who wanted to learn everything at once. One day, he complained to his friend that the Master was not teaching everyone the same way. The Master was passing by and heard him. He asked, “Shen, what is it that you want to know?” Shen replied, “Master, I feel that you give the others more teaching than me. Why is that?” The Master replied, “Think of me as a bell. Give me a soft tap and you will get a tiny ring. Strike me hard, and you will receive a loud, clanging sound.” The student asked, “What do you mean, Master?” The Master explained, “A teacher is only a means to reach knowledge. No matter how good a teacher, a student will learn only as much as he himself tries.” Shen finally understood and stopped complaining.

Moral: The more effort you put in, the better the results.
