Ben Macdhui is the second highest peak in Scotland. It is also reputed to be haunted by the presence of the ‘Big Grey Man’. Some climbers have also reported eerie experiences like uncontrollable feelings of fear and panic, some seeing a huge grey figure behind them, and others only hearing sounds. Psychologists say that optical illusion, known as the Brocken Spectre, is a plausible explanation for the legend. A Brocken spectre can occur in certain atmospheric conditions when the sun is at a particular angle. The Big Grey Man is a manifestation of the spirit of the place, transformed by imagination into an actual being.
