Once, an old woman brought up a black calf that grew into a strong bull. He came to be known as ‘Kaalu’. Kaalu was full of katannu (gratitude). He often thought, ‘The old woman is poor, yet feeds me well. How will I ever repay her?’ One day, Kaalu saw a merchant trying to cross the river. He had heavy loads with him. Kaalu went closer to him and offered to help. The river current was very strong but Kaalu pulled hard. When the task was done, the merchant hung a bag full of gold coins around Kaalu’s neck. As Kaalu reached home, the old woman saw his bruises and the pouch filled with gold coins. She said tearfully, “I will always love you, even if you don’t earn any money for me.”
Moral: Love does not ask to return favour.
