The Bloop

A loud, ultra-low frequency sound was heard at listening stations on hydrophones underwater over 5,000 km across the Pacific. The Bloop or The Mysterious Noises was located a mere 1,760 km from the sunken city of R’yleh which led to stories that it was the sound of an unknown animal. This was due to the ‘organic’ nature of the noise. This theory elevated the Bloop to the level of a great unsolved mystery. Seismologists confirmed that the Bloop really was just an icequake-sounds of ice breaking up and cracking or ice calving off glaciers into the ocean. This ruined the fun for fiction fans.
